    What to do with

    ANIMAL BEDDING

    There are different types of animal bedding and they need to be got rid of in different ways.

    Where can I recycle? »

    Pet blankets, towels and beds made from fabric - can be recycled at textiles recycling points; but if your dog’s bed is made from plastic for example, you will need to take it to your local recycling centre.
    Soiled hay and sawdust from rabbit and guinea pig hutches - can be added to most garden waste collection schemes run by councils. Alternatively you can take it to a recycling centre that accepts garden waste.

    • Old pet blankets or beds made from fabric can be recycled with textiles at a recycling centre;
    • Used hay, straw and sawdust bedding from 'vegetarian' animals such as rabbits or guinea pigs can be put in your household garden waste collection (if this service is offered in your area);
    • Alternatively, it can be taken to a recycling centre (also known as the 'tip') and recycled with garden waste Hay, straw and sawdust can also be added to your home compost bin.

    What about animal waste?

    • Pet waste such as cat litter should be bagged and put in the general waste bin.

    If in doubt, always check with your local council.
