5 surprising ways you could help power summer festivals by recycling

Publication date:

Wales is the third best nation in the world when it comes to that environmental measure

Recycle for Wales is teaming up with festivals across Wales to celebrate its status as the world’s third best recycling nation.

The campaign group has uncovered the energy secrets behind people's recycling in a bid to encourage more of the same.

Here are five 5 ways that your recycling can power festivals:

1. Factor in recycling

Hoping to catch the rays?

Make sure you slap on the sun cream and once you’re finished with the bottle, slip it in the recycling bin.

Recycling seven plastic bottles saves enough energy to power a big event screen for one hour.

2. Hydrate yourself and power the sound

One beer, one soft drink, one beer, one soft drink... remember that rule to protect yourself from a sore head and remember to recycle your empty drinks can too.

Recycling 43 cans of pop saves enough energy to power the music on the main stage for one hour.

3. Power the DJ

Planning on boogying from day to night?

Keep yourself well hydrated with water, while helping to keep the sounds of your favourite DJ pumping at the festival.

Recycling just two empty water bottles saves enough energy to power a mixing console for over an hour.

4. Don’t cause a blackout

Warning! Don’t try and drink this many to yourself, but did you know that recycling 168 empty beer cans saves enough energy to power main stage lighting for one hour?

5. Have a go at home

Funky festival hair? Doesn’t matter how much glitter you’ve got on you, chances are you won’t get the opportunity to shower until after the festival, so ramp up on the dry shampoo.

Make sure you recycle the aerosol cans afterwards - just one saves enough energy for an eight-minute shower.

And make sure you recycle that glitter spray can too.
